Malia's School of Dance

The Dances

There are 6 major dances: Foxtrot, Waltz, Swing, Rumba, Cha Cha, and Tango (or Polka - if you live in Wisconsin!).

Foxtrot is known as the "get-acquainted" dance; when it was introduced in 1913 by Harry Fox, it became the social standard dance.

Waltz is considered the Mother of our dances; it has been around for centuries and is still popular today.

Swing is FUN; its liveliness becomes contagious!

The Rumba began the Latin American dance crazes; it is very romantic - a great "after-dinner" dance.

Cha Cha is Swing with Latin personality; my favorite dance (I think!).

Tango was popularized in 1921 by Rudolph Valentino in the movie "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse." It is one of the most dramatic dances.

In addition to the 6 major dances, other popular social dances include the Quick Step, Samba, Mambo/Salsa, Hustle, Merengue, Bolero, and the Night Club 2-Step.
